Robert Ranney

  • Attorney

Robert is a results-driven litigator who represents businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals in complex civil matters across the country in trial and appellate courts. His practice spans commercial litigation and business disputes, RICO and fraud cases, breach of contract and non-compete disputes, ERISA matters, and trademark infringement litigation in federal and state courts.

Having spent two years clerking for federal judges, Robert brings to the firm rare insight into how to craft arguments that resonate in chambers and persuade judges. In fact, in an action concerning violations of U.S. constitutional law, a federal judge appointed Robert to help an unrepresented plaintiff navigate the procedural and strategic complexities inherent in trying a case by jury.

Known for his command of complex motion practice and appellate briefing, colleagues and clients often turn to Robert for strategic litigation support and to draft high-stakes motions and appeals. He is also tapped by clients and colleagues to prepare amicus briefs in consequential litigation throughout the country. His deep understanding of procedural strategy and persuasive legal writing has helped clients and co-counsel achieve successful outcomes in some of their most challenging cases in the pinnacle of venues—including the U.S. Supreme Court and Kentucky Supreme Court.

Whether navigating a complex commercial dispute or drafting a pivotal dispositive motion, Robert brings precision, strategic foresight, and an unwavering focus on achieving his clients’ goals.

Outside the courtroom, Robert serves as Assistant Director of the Ordered Liberty Program at the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, where he leads Socratic dinner discussions over first principles with fellows, law professors, and judges.
